Thought for the Day Sunday  26th june 2015

By Rev Kathy Trimby

I wonder how many of you have ever played the game, ‘Follow the Leader’, where a leader does something and you have to follow their actions as quick as you can and the last one is out? Hold that thought… Now think about a school, and asking for volunteers for anything and you always have an abundance, often without even knowing what they are volunteering for.  Now think about our Gospel reading for today and Jesus telling people to ‘Follow Him’, and the various responses, all being willing but first wanting to bury the dead and saying goodbye to family before following him, in other words giving other things greater priority, not being like the school children committing immediately without knowing what, where or how but we are fearful, more cautious, put  restrictions on our discipleship, particularly when we don’t know what exactly it may or will entail or where it might lead. But have we ever stopped to consider what the consequences might be for doing so?  Jesus says that if we do we are not ‘fit for service in the Kingdom of God’, which may sound a bit harsh but we must put faith in God and His service first, no matter what and in truth if we love someone and trust them we will do whatever it takes, go wherever almost without thinking, we want to be with them, show we love and care for them in word and in action, and if it is within our power we will do it.  I asked a father of a child to be baptised if he would die for his child the other day, to which he replied ‘yes, he would’, God died for us His children, would we be prepared to do the same, or trust in His love for us enough, to know He will protect us, guide us, and more, even when we think it is scary, and we don’t know.  Will we put our hand in His and led Him lead us and help us to follow Him?  And will e react almost like a game of follow the leader, because we don’t want to be out but remain with and in God.  I wonder.  Don’t look back then, look forward, fix your eyes on your leader, on Jesus, and follow him without fear, new lands, new experiences, new opportunities lay at your feet and beckon!
